Julian Assange Released?! (Plus, Biden Bans Kaspersky!) | Technado Ep. 366
This week on Technado, we've got breaking news: there's a new MOVEit bug, Apple released a firmware update for AirPods, and we've got robot skin to fuel your nightmares.
In one of this week's biggest stories, Julian Assange has been released and is homeward bound. SolarWinds is back in the headlines, this time with an exploited Serv-U bug. Apple, Microsoft, and several other big tech companies are in hot water for violating the EU's Digital Markets Act. Hackers are using a Windows XXS flaw to execute arbitrary commands. And to wrap the first half of the show, we take a look at the alleged breach of the US Federal Reserve and the group that's supposedly behind it.
After the break, it's time for Deja News: NVIDIA's short-lived time at the top has come to an end as they suffer the biggest short-term loss in history. We may finally have an answer to the Apple-Kaspersky debacle: the Biden administration has banned the software in the US and sanctioned a dozen Kaspersky execs. Then, Google's Project Naptime is using AI to let engineers take more siestas. The ever-litigious Nintendo has officially shut down Yuzu and Citra, two big Nintendo emulators. And the CDK hack affecting car dealerships nationwide is still ongoing - and recovery may take years.

I still have so many episodes to go through since I subscribed. There is a reason to be careful what and how one goes about commenting since it is not only ethical hackers watching this but the bad boys. What gets me though is why so few comments on a channel with over 150k subs. reason why I like ITPro is because they explain things better... so for people like me it is a useful source, in that they validate what I know and deal with but they do their research

Why target Kaspersky? I wonder if it is only just a geopolitical thing because I have not seen any negative news on Kaspersky such as doing shady business. You got to look at Apple and the incident with Kaspersky not paying them and then a week later our government makes the decision to ban Kaspersky that sounds a little suspicious to me that the current administration would band a, I think good, product that genuinely wants to help in the area of cybersecurity.

56:30 China has a communist party but it is not a communist state. It has a mixed capitalist-based economy. Communism and capitalism are independent from authoritarianism which China ascribes to. Pinochet’s Chile is an example of authoritarian capitalism.

hacking a vr headset can be used for blackmail, lots of users use it for porn at least once or twice and recording your screen and pass through camera while you use it and then use it for blackmail could be very damaging. It is harder to deny the footage if leaked.

AnyDesk is good, trouble is, it is also the #1 tool scammers use (phishing, fraud etc), but extremely useful to take them down also [edit] they are addressing the issue surrounding keys and authentication. It will happen in incremental updates.[/edit] Teamviewer is not bad but not fast enough over slower connections and also the slightest versioning diff between say 2 users can result in problems connecting. Remote Desktop (Windows) is just plain useless. UltraVNC, TightVNC and so on should be avoided. There is A LOT of these remote desktop tools, but I recommend that people stay away from them. If you just do a simple port scan using say wireshark you will see why Conclusion. AnyDesk works on various platforms and they create versions for certified cyber security experts which contains A TON of tools none of the rest have.

cryptography is something I rarely comment on but since I deal with this stuff and you seriously lack comments... Argon 2 is not really hashing in the conventional sense but for the sake of the audience Argon 2 is just another SHA based hashing algorithm to 'slow hash' Argon2 is strong, far stronger than what the Pentagon uses but SLOW... you do not need this SHA-512 is fine. Argon2 was chosen as the winner because of it <500ms authentication (interactive response time). bcrypt is still better at defense. As with all of these tools you need to decide what is best for what purpose. OWASP have guidelines on this and includes other variants of Argon2 such as Argon2i/Argon2id.

Healthcare corps often do not do make use of pentesters because they do not always engage in ethical practices themselves and infosec experts may find this information they wish to keep secret. If you understand this you will understand why they are often targeted, hackers are aware of this. The cost? your private information. If they did do the aforementioned it is less likely to happen. This will happen again and again. Whether they are worth $250m or $250b makes no difference. Normally only after a data breach infosec guys are sent in to investigate and fortify. Sadly this will remain the case. If they considered having these infosec people sign a NDA it will only raise suspicion. Since they deal with such highly sensitive information, they often do not get to choose the infosec company, instead oversight committees do so. I hope this makes it a bit more clear. like I said before, I deal with InfoSec (ONSINT to be exact) but before that I did some 'Red Hat' work (and what makes this this different is that you are part of those teams so to speak and who you have a contract with ALWAYS have you tied to an NDA)

You gotta understand modern day protection software are essentially rootkits. Sometimes you need to become the thing you are fighting against. Kaspersky, Trend, etc... work like this. Sad that the US of A banned Kaspersky. I often wonder when I take a day off to watch content what is next on the 'todo list'

  • @xXstevilleXx

Recall as mentioned in your latest vid reminds me of some models of new iPhones that do the same which people discovered using infrared taking an image every 4-5 seconds... you know to see if you are still viewing the screen... BUT... this lame answer only had users place it far away while the screen is off and it still goes about doing the same. There is a reason why I only use old phones since I open it physically detach the mic's, cams and those types of censors, I manually connect to external devices if I need to use it for voice calls or video calls

  • @xXstevilleXx
    @xXstevilleXx 9 днів тому

Interesting you guys mention Kaspersky. You already mention the reason. The US Department of Commerce is not banning it for the reasons they claim. Kind of the same reason why TT is not banned for reasons claimed. I like the satire and commentary on this channel, it dovetails so neatly into my own research, so it is fun to watch

  • @xXstevilleXx

Brunette with glasses... dunno I find it attractive... any rate. Yes, I hope people listen to you both. Major things are going on and Adobe essentially told creators, well your stuff is no longer yours, of course they would never use what user's create for training LLMs, but that is the the whole point. Windows and Apple with their new AI is not what many think, so as result many have started to migrate to Linux. I already use Linux (OSINT) related. So in short ethical hacking. There problem is not only that but soon Windows users (in terms of the intel I gather thus far) will end up with a bootloader essentially and the rest of Windows will be a hybrid that requires users to be online since part of the OS will be offline and part of it online. CVE-2024-30078 is dubious, for MS to have missed this... yeah, I think not. The is rest is well researched and well narrated. I have nothing to add there. Btw, Recall capturing screenshots every few seconds is a direct violation of privacy. Of course even before this even if you turned of tracking and such they still spy on users, this is just so painfully obvious (recall). Glad I am not using Windows (well I am but it is jailed so they can do what they want, it will not serve them. Of course, there is stuff one cannot comment, since YT (yeah) will likely delete this.

Sorry but a Penalty is a form of punishment. In other words if you don't agree to this term we can admonish you with a monetary punishment. Not a physical punisment but we will sock your pocketbook. Just like in any game if you don't play by the rules we can give you a small punishment so you will not do that again. It is called a Penalty. It is all in the way you look at it. And they know that 99% of people will not read nor at least understand what all the small print and legalease means in what they are agreeing to. It is made to be that way on purpose. And is most times pages and pages long. You literally give up your rights anymore when you agree to any of these Contracts. As that is what you are doing is making a contract to use that product. Adobes is no different in this aspect. I don't use Adobe, and nothing that would require me to use cloud services any more than I have to. I value privacy as much as you can now days. There are free forms of these products and yes a learning curve but it's free, may not be as polished in some areas yet might be more than adobe in others. Even Linux is going by the wayside as far as privacy is concerned, slowly but it is happening due to AI getting into everything. This should worry people but most just think this is normal and it's not. People are propagandized till they think it's ok. That it is the norm. Here in the US there are several places that take Bitcoin or at least use to. I think NewEgg did or does. Amazon I think handles Bitcoins. I don't have any BitCoins myself. But due to the price of the coins now they might not, but have already got their foot in the door so to speak with having that as part of their own investments. Haven't checked in a while myself. Though wished now I had invested in some. But at the time it looked more like some type of new scam thing. Trading in real cash for some digital object you couldn't touch. And I don't doubt Nvidia being now in the top money makers, have you priced what a 4090 GPU costs or any of the 4000 series of those cards cost. And motherboards are now getting up there to, Most of the times it's more then the whole rest of the system you are building, $1500 to $2,000 dollars US and the warranty they don't keep either. It's all about the chips to as they have their chips in almost everything now. Some Tech sites have reported that more than 50%of these GPUs are just so much eco trash. The PCBs crack right where the GPU lock is and they don't cover that in your warranty. So far the whole 4000 series of cards are underwhelming to say the least, especially in comparison to earlier Series of GPU's for the moneys you are paying for these GPU's. They intentionally have made these PCBs thinner. I'm sure to save money. The problem with this is the PCB can't take any stress at a major Physical Stress point in the PCB. Thats just one small thing But makes them a lot of money, and saves them a lot. They said this wasn't covered " after the fact of selling the cards" and the problem has come up. And Gaming, Look at what G-force now has become, it's a subscription service when they use to give it out freely to gamers. Gaming brings them a lot of money, prestige and power. Gaming is a trillion dollar thing on it's own and around the world and in almost every country. And like Microsoft they have managed to get their fingers in nearly everything else they can. Nvidia has become a household name now.

I was recently let go from a call center I'd worked in for years where they rushed us and because I took my time I was constantly on someone's shit list but constantly had good reviews. The company structure was bad to the point they were damn near about to fold but sure...it's my single individual failure. 🙄 That AI system sounds like it would cause a different set of problems. I don'f think it's a good idea. People hate AI in IVR systems. I have backend and front end experience of them. This seems like it will anger everyone long term. The solution is restructure. You can't tech a human based issue.

The public are sold projects that have taken years to make into a product, about 2+ years old, so we buy a 2 year old device advertised as brand new.

Share the Windows wifi vulnerability that affects all Windows versions with anyone who made fun of Linux for having a backdoor in the xz package (one that never had a chance to be used)

Actually that wifi vulnerability is wormable so they don't need to target you. If you compromise one person you can have their computer automatically compromise nearby unpatched machines. You could easily form a botnet with this if people don't update.

First time watcher, it came up as a youtube suggestion. I really enjoyed the fact that you both made tech approachable. I would say I have a reasonable knowledge on computers, I built my first one at age 11, but at the same time there is a lot I don't know. For example, Linux is something I have only just started to dip my toes into. So thank you for explaining concepts that you spoke about that people may not understand. I also really enjoyed the light hearted back and forth you both had. I think you work great together as co-hosts.
